For nearly 4,000 years, the Children of the Forest and the First Men grow closer. In time, the First Men embrace their ways and customs. With the exception of the Iron Islands, the gods of the Children become those of the First Men. Many of the noble houses today trace their lineage back to the Age of Heroes, such as Brandon the Builder, founder of House Stark, and Lann the Clever, who winkled Casterly Rock from the Casterlys and founded House Lannister.
In this time, the Long Night seems to last for a generation, and the longest, coldest and darkest winter descends upon Westeros. Under the cover of darkness, the Others invade Westeros, killing and raising up the dead to be their servants. The Long Night comes to an end after the Battle of the Dawn, after the Children and the First Men rise to defeat the Others. Using dragonglass weapons, they push them back into the frozen reaches of the Far North. Bran the Builder, aided by the giants, First Men, and perhaps the Children of the Forest, raise the Wall - a monumental fortification of ice and ancient magic. The Sworn Brotherhood of the Night's Watch is formed to shelter the realms of men from the menaces of the north.
