Giants are a race of sentient humanoids that live in the extreme north of Westeros. They are capable of great feats of strength such as wrenching the bars of an iron gate apart. They are covered by a shaggy pelt of fur that is thicker below their waists than above. They speak the Old Tongue of the First Men. Songs of the wildlings tell that giants were at one time more plentiful, but they were hunted by men and driven from their stone halls. By the time Mance Rayder became King-Beyond-the-Wall, there were only several hundred remaining.
Direwolves can grow as large as horses. Like other wolves, direwolves are social animals and travel in packs. They are efficient solitary hunters as well, and extremely intelligent. Left to its own devices, a solitary direwolf can join a pack of regular wolves, and its larger size can grant it a significant advantage when establishing pack dominance. Before the Starks found a litter of six pups, direwolves had not been sighted south of the Wall for 200 years. Like other wolves, direwolves can form a magical bond with a warg.
Children of the Forest sometimes referred to simply as the "children" are a mysterious non-human race that originally inhabited Westeros continent, long before the arrival of the First Men during the Dawn Age, more than 12,000 years ago. Little is known about the children. They are a mysterious and magical people who have not been seen by humans for thousands of years.
